Beating Homelessness

About the project

The Unity Roots Beating Homelessness project through Creativity is in partnership with Church Homeless Trust and Riverside at The Quays. It was set up in 2018 to support people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The project is music and arts therapy based, designed to help and support some of the most vulnerable people in our society by running workshops and personal development courses with the focus on music and the creative arts.

The project is set in its own music studio at The Quays in Sittingbourne, Kent, where we run a number of different activities including:

  • 12-week music programme that focuses on learning to play live instruments, singing, song-writing and recording

  • film making and drama course

  • band development programme

During 2020 we will open as a recording studio but can already offer workshops to outside organisations as well as the participants we currently work with from The Quays.

Lisa & the Lab Rats

Lisa and The Lab Rats formed in 2020 and play a mix of cover tunes including songs from Fleetwood Mac, White Stripes, Tracey Chapman, Eurythmics and The Cranberries. However, this is just the start as they are already working on their own material and perfecting their skills ready for more live gigs coming up.

The band are based in Sittingbourne in Kent and have a line up of Lisa (Lead vocals), Reuben (keys and guitar), Joe (Guitar and vocals), Jack (Bass guitar) and Steve (Drums).

The band are currently recording their demo and preparing for live gigs.

The project has given me a new outlook on my life and a new prospective on the future. My bass playing skills are improving on a weekly basis and I would like to work on my skills with sound engineering for a future job opportunity.

This project has improved my health and well being so much as it helps keep me organised its something that happens weekly which I looked forward to as it meant I could socialise with other people.

The project has helped with my confidence by engaging with others with a similar goal to make music in a friendly atmosphere, also I’ve been able to help others with learning their instruments and that has boosted my confidence in my own abilities.
