Beating Homelessness

THROUGH CREATIVITY

About the project

The Unity Roots Beating Homelessness project through Creativity is in partnership with Church Homeless Trust and Riverside at The Quays. It was set up in 2018 to support people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The project is music and arts therapy based, designed to help and support some of the most vulnerable people in our society by running workshops and personal development courses with the focus on music and the creative arts.

The project is set in its own music studio at The Quays in Sittingbourne, Kent, where we run a number of different activities including:

  • 12-week music programme that focuses on learning to play live instruments, singing, song-writing and recording

  • film making and drama course

  • Music and arts therapy

  • Sound engineering and music technology

  • band development programme

  • Band / Artists recordings

During 2021 we will open as a recording studio and can offer workshops to outside organisations as well as the participants we currently work with from The Quays.

The project has formed a classic rock band with residents from Riverside. We have worked up a set, learnt the tunes and have started gigging. The set includes classics such as Knocking n Heavens Door, Hey Jo, Sunshine of your love, Come Together and Play that Funky Music.

We were so captivated by her talent that after some more music sessions with her and discussion we signed her to Unity Roots Records and will support her development hopefully into becoming a professional singer / songwriter.

Kira is a mix of Adel, Lilly Allen and Amy Winehouse plus Kira's own magic.
